Direct Rail Services Rail Depot Open Day at Crewe

LOCO enthusiasts from all over the country were among the 1,200 people who visited the Gresty Bridge Depot in Crewe this Saturday 19th July 2008. The day had raised almost £3000 which will be distributed to charities in Crewe and the surrounding areas.

Direct Rail Services (DRS) threw open the gate of its Depot, on Gresty Road with a ribbon cutting ceremony by the MP of Crewe and Nantwich Mr Edward Timpson, who said, “It was an honour to officially open the inaugural open day of Direct Rail Services here in Crewe. The impressive railway stock on display not only reinforced the role the railways have played in the history of Crewe, but also the continued importance of the railway to our town today. I am glad that DRS have given the community such a fantastic opportunity to get closer to their vital work.”

Such is the popularity of the event that visitors were queuing at the gates eagerly with the event kicking off at 10:00.

The day was also marked with two official naming of locomotives. The first naming took place in the morning with the unveiling of the ‘Solway Princess’ on DRS loco 47832 by Rail Express Competition Joint Winners Mr Sean Magee of Northern Ireland and Mr Walter Satfford of Lancaster.

The second naming in the afternoon was unveiled by the Worshipful The Mayor of Crewe and Nantwich Councillor Brian Silvester and the Mayoress Sheila Davies who restored the original name of ‘Craftsman’ on DRS loco 47501. ‘Craftsman’ started life in 1966 from Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough and was named after a rank in the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME)

DRS provides rail freight services for spent nuclear fuels as well as award winning intermodal traffic in the UK. It also provides a valuable Rail Head Treatment Train service in the autumn months in clearing leaves of the railway infrastructure ensuring all rail traffic on the network can operate smoothly with no disruption.
